LOCATION RECORDING

A professional 24 channel recording studio in the back of a car? Analogue tape on location? Overdubs in the country? Church ambiance? Concert hall? Relaxed recording at your house? Yep, I can do that – and what's more I love doing it for a variety of reasons.

It's an inspiring and fun way to record, to find a suitable acoustic space and to capture that acoustic on the recording.

Then there's the relaxed vibe away from the studio in a place that feels familiar and is "off the clock". Or the inspiration of recording in a visually arresting place. Or a place that has emotional or historical significance or perhaps it has an unusual instrument, say the Melbourne Town Hall pipe organ …

My portable rig is based around a comprehensive selection of quality vintage and modern mics fed into a custom rack of hand-built preamps, piped into an RME UFX and an Apogee AD16x and tracked to digital or to 8 track half inch. Full independent headphone monitoring too.

Some of the projects I've done on location have included the Night Terrors' with the Melbourne Townhall Pipe Organ, post classical trio Daquqi in a mudbrick house in Flowerdale, Peter Knight's Alliotrope album in a Seddon warehouse, 9 local bands in a mud hut in rural Swaziland, Jazz trio Fallingwater in an old theatre in South Melbourne, Indie band Lamplight in Castlemaine Gaol, and of course lots of concerts and gigs and more.
